Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading Indian men's and women's team in the Asian Games 2023. The announcement came few days after BCCI had confirmed the team's participation in the games happening in China. While Harmanpreet is full time skipper of Women in Blue, Ruturaj will be leading the team for the first time. A secondary team is sent to the world cup considering the World Cup which is overlapping few days of the games.
It's a great opportunity for Ruturaj Gaikwad who is currently in the senior squad for West Indies. His calm head over the shoulders make him a good captain. He has proved it already playing for Maharashtra. He is very well groomed under MS Dhoni in the Chennai Super Kings camp. Dhoni himself was once left awestruck by the game awareness of Ruturaj, when the later suggested some ways to dismiss Russell.
What further strengthen Ruturaj's case is that he is an excellent batter. He is one of the most technically sound batting youngsters. A solid technique has helped him fetch Orange Cap in IPL 2022 , batting in great rythm against best bowlers. He is a great player of spin. He has the right intent to play. Earlier this year in Ranji trophy match against Tamilnadu, he was injured, yet he came to bat scoring a magnificent 195 runs. All in all, he is an excellent prospect for the team, and giving him the opportunity to led will help him massively.
The only concern here is that BCCI should not restrict him to the second string team. The opportunity to lead the team is great, but it also means he is not in the probables of world cup. Looking at what he can do, he should've been included in the squad for grandest event in cricket. He is the future of Indian cricket. And therefore, the BCCI should not restrict him just to lead the second string team, but instead should make efforts to include him in senior team in all the series happening post the Asian Games. Wishing Ruturaj and the team all the best for the Asian Games
