India is known for its batters. Since ages, Indian batters have ruled the world of cricket. Maharaja Ranjitsinhji, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Abid Ali, Gundappa Vishwanath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli have continued the legacy of Indian batting in some style. And now, youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal are carrying the legacy forward in the oldest format of the game. With 712 runs in just 1 series, he became the third highest run scorer in a series by an Indian player. If he is the third with these numbers, one could only imagine who the top 2 are. Here's a list of Indian batters with highest runs in one series:
13) Mohinder Amarnath:
One of the finest red ball cricketers of India, Mohinder Amarnath is 13th on the list, with 582 runs in the series against arch rivals Pakistan in 1982/83. The man of the match for India in semi final and finals of 1983 world cup, hit 3 centuries and 3 half centuries in the series.
12) Vijay Manjrekar:
One of the technically most correct batters, Vijay Manjrekar, father of Sanjay Manjrekar is 12th on the list, with a tally of 586 runs in just 4 matches against England in 1961/62. A phenomenal average of runs around 6 decades back, in conditions difficult for batting makes this record even more special. With 1 big century knock of 189 runs, and 4 half centuries, he showed his immaculate batting skills.
11) Virat Kohli:
It would be a surprise if run machine is not in the list of any record involving top run getters. The 2018 Indian tour of England got the best of Virat, as he compensated for 2014 failure by negating Anderson and Broad beautifully. 593 runs in 5 matches, with 2 centuries and 3 half centuries did the job of awakening the beast, which he continues to be today.
10) Mohinder Amarnath:
The hero of 1983 world cup, appears in the list twice with 598 runs to his name in the series against West Indies in 1982/83. The bouncy and fast Carribbean wickets and the scary West Indian attack didn't scare someone like him, who scored 2 centuries and 4 half centuries. The proud son of India, carried the legacy of his father, Lala Amarnath in a way that his motherland felt blessed to have him on the side.
9) Rahul Dravid:
When one speaks about runs in tests, one expects Rahul Dravid to be in the record books. And rightly so, the Wall of Indian cricket stands tall in this list. The most technically sound batter from India in 2000's, Dravid scored 602 runs in just 6 innings out of 4 test matches which India played in England. With a double century, 2 centuries and 3 half centuries, he continued to exploit the England bowlers mercilessly when India toured England in 2002.
8) Virat Kohli:
A repetitive name in this list, Kohli stands 8th on this list with 610 runs in just 5 innings of 3 matches he played against Sri Lanka in 2017/18. Registering a big double hundred knock of 243 runs in the same series, he went on to score a couple of hundreds and a half century alongside. It was the same infamous series, when Delhi pollution was at its peak and Sri Lanka players complained about nausea, when Virat did crunches on the ground to show how high his fitness levels are.
7) Rahul Dravid:
Mr Dependable and his performance in the SENA countries is a love story which world witnessed for a decade and half when he served Indian cricket. A dominant Australia of 2000's didn't matter to Jammy, as he hit the Aussie bowlers in their own backyard left, right and centre. 619 runs off 4 matches with a magnificent match saving knock of 233 in Border Gavaskar Trophy of 2003/04 still lives in the minds of Indian cricket fans.
6) Dilip Sardesai:
"An aggressive stroke player" as termed by many, he is one of the reasons for India's fast scoring rate in the 1970's. It's a marvellous achievement to score 642 runs in 5 matches back in 1970. With 1 double century scoring 212, 2 hundreds and 1 half century, he faced the West Indies' pacers with great skill on the fast wickets of Caribbean in 1970/71 series. The Goa born batter was also regarded as one of the finest players against spin.
5) Virat Kohli:
It seems like Virat has a special affinity for England, as yet again he reached his purple patch of form against a touring England side. The 2016/17 England team touring India was at the receiving end of wrath of Virat's batting, when he scored 655 runs off 5 matches which included a double century knock of 235, one century and 2 half centuries. The series was also a memorable one for Indians as Karun Nair went on to score a phenomenal triple hundred knock of 303.
4) Virat Kohli:
When one speaks about Virat, one always remembers his heroics in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2014/15. His first assignment as a test skipper left the world in admiration. Twin centuries on captaincy debut, a phenomenal innings at Adelaide which almost pulled off a miraculous chase saw him setting a benchmark as a captain. Amassing a total of 692 runs, with 4 centuries and 1 half century, he mada a statement that he is here to rule, which he did as a player as well as a captain.
3) Yashasvi Jaiswal:
Yashasvi Jaiswal is made of a different breed. In spite of being from a generation of T20's , he is filling the shoes of great Indian batters. Jaiswal, whose story is inspirational and who had a dream debut, is all set to rule the red ball game for a long period. And living up to the hype around him, he amassed 712 runs in the recently concluded 5 match series against England, with 2 massive double tons. Also, with 26 sixes, he is now the batter to hit the most sixes in any test series.
2) Sunil Gavaskar:
Epitome of class and concentration, Sunil Gavaskar is the best batter India has ever had. He feared none, but the opposition feared him a lot. With an immaculate technique and thorough understanding of the game, he faced the deadliest bowlers without a helmet, scoring truckload of runs. And doing what he does the best, he scored 732 runs when West Indies toured India in 1978/79. The series saw Gavaskar score a double hundred, 3 centuries and 1 half century.
1) Sunil Gavaskar:
The greatest batter of all time in red ball cricket, Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for the highest run getter in one series. What's more astonishing is the fact that it was his debut series. One has to be either a maniac, or Sunil Gavaskar to amass a whopping 774 runs against the mighty West Indies in their own backyard, on their debut series. A swashbuckling double hundred, 3 centuries and 3 half centuries by the Little Master left the world in awe and in admiration of the man from Mumbai. His heroics came in front of his idol Rohan Kanhai in 1970/71 series, and till date, even after 54 years, a total of 774 runs is the highest by any debutant in a test series in the century and half year history of the game.
