Test cricket is the oldest format of the game. It is the format, where the game began. Red ball cricket brings out the best out of everyone. While the format sees lot of runs, sixes was always a rare phenomenon to witness in test a match. But now, with the widespread of T20, the number of times a batter clears ropes in tests have gone significantly up. The recently concluded series saw a staggering number of sixes being hit. And similar were some series, which saw a good number of sixes. Here's a list of 10 series with most number of sixes:
10) West Indies Vs Australia (2003):
The series in between Australia and West Indies, which happened in 2003 in the Carribbean islands was one to remember for the fans. Played with enough heat, sledging and tremendous passion, stars like Lara, Ponting, Gilchrist contributed to a total of 47 sixes in the series. Eventually the Aussies of 2000's won the series 3-1
9) West Indies vs Pakistan (1977):
The 5 match series between Pakistan and West Indies back in 1977, saw a whopping 47 sixes being hit. Around 3 decades prior to T20 cricket being introduced, this series clearly stands as an example of being miles ahead of its time. It's also a testimony of how dominant the West Indies of 70's were.
8) India vs England (2016):
A 5 match series between India and England in 2016 is 8th on the list, with a total of 49 sixes being hit. It was the same series when Karun Nair hit a triple hundred. A young Indian side comprising of a blend of youth and experience, led by Virat Kohli won the series comfortably 4-0.
7) Ashes (2005):
The 2005 Ashes which happened in England is arguably one of the best test series in the history of the game. With every match going to wire, the English team managed to defeat the dominant Aussies by the barest of margins. The series saw a potential superstar in the form of Kevin Pietersen. A total of 51 sixes were hit in the series.
6) India vs Pakistan (2006):
India's tour of Pakistan in 2006 was special for India in multiple ways. It was the same series when Sehwag and Rahul Dravid registered an unbeaten partnership on 410 runs. Also captain cool MS Dhoni went on to score his maiden ton in this series. A total of 49 series were hit in the series.
5) New Zealand vs Pakistan (2014):
The series between Blackcaps and Pakistan in 2014 is 5th on the list, with a total of 59 sixes. The three match series conducted in United Arab Emirates, the then home ground for Pakistan eventually ended up in a draw with both teams winning a match each.
4) India vs South Africa (2019):
South Africa's tour of India in 2019 saw a total of 65 sixes hit in the tournament. Domination of India was evident, as they hit 47 sixes in series, with Rohit Sharma hitting 19 of those himself. To make it even more memorable, Men in Blue went on to whitewash the Proteas 3-0.
3) Ashes (2013/14):
A total of 65 sixes were hit in the Ashes of 2013/14 which happened in Australia. The record was equalled 5 years later, but wasn't broken for around a decade. The pure domination by the Aussies in the series made the series memorable for them by winning all the 5 games as they whitewashed England 5-0.
2) Ashes (2023):
The 2023 Ashes which happened in England, previously boasted the record of having maximum sixes in a series, which tallies to 74. One of the finest series ended up in a draw of 2-2, with all the closely contested encounters.
1) India vs England (2024):
The recently concluded test series between India and England tops the list with a staggering 102 sixes. 72 out of those sixes wer hit by India, making it the highest number of sixes by one team in a series. Yashasvi Jaiswal cleared the ropes 26 times in this series, making him the player to hit most sixes alone in a series.
