Winning a medal in the Olympics is a dream for every athlete. Its the ultimate dream of anyone who plays any sport. A player may have medals in the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and other tournaments, but the medal in the Olympics stands tall above everything else. Some athletes achieve their dream of standing on the podium quite early at an age where most of their age group is still busy studying. And similar has been the case of a lot of Indian athletes, who've won the medals at quite an early age, showcasing their prowess. Here's a list of 5 youngest Olympic medalists for India.
5) Leander Paes:
The Indian tennis legend who was recently included in "Hall of Fame", won the bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In a long career spanning for around 3 decades, Paes achieved tremendous success. But the most prominent medal in his cabinet, the Olympics was won by him when he was 23 years and 7 months old.
4) Vijender Singh:
In 2008 Beijing Olympics, India managed to win only 3 medals. And one of those 3 medal winners was the boxer from Harayana, Vijender Singh. Known for his reflexes, Vijender won the medal when he was 22 years and 9 months old. The boxer later also worked in films as an actor and recently joined the Bhartiya Janata Party. Its notable to see that he did all of this with just being 38 years of age.
3) Manu Bhaker:
The most recent Olympic medal winner for India, Manu Bhaker stands at the 3rd place in the elite list. She achieved the first piece of glory for India im Paris Olympics 2024 yesterday by winning bronze while being 22 years and 5 months old. Its quite staggering to know that by this tender age, the champion who hails from Haryana already has 9 World cup golds, 1 world championship gold, 1 Commonwealth Games Gold, 1 Asian Games Gold and a total of staggering 35 medals to her name in international circuit.
2) Saina Nehwal:
Although not much active now, Saina Nehwal was a sensation in around a decade of which she played. She set a new benchmark for women's badminton in India. The first ever badminton medal for India in Olympics was won by Saina, when she clinched on to bronze medal in 2012 London Olympics. She was 22 years and 4 months old when she achieved this feat. Her achievement inspired many of the women athletes, and her legacy was beautifully carried by PV Sindhu later on.
1) PV Sindhu:
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is undoubtedly one of the most respected sportspersons in India. And rightly so, as the champion is one of the very few players from India who have clinched on to the Olympic medal twice. After winning a silver medal in 2016 Rio De Janerio Olympics, the queen of badminton went ahead to fetch bronze in 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well. When she achieved the feat for the first time in 2016, she was just 21 years and 1 month old. The youngest Olympic Gold medalist for India, and the only Indian world champion in badminton, she now eyes for her 3rd consecutive Olympics medal, and she certainly has a chance to create history.
