The Indian team is back to winning ways after the first 2 losses in the T20 series against West Indies. The past few months were disappointing for the Indian cricket team and fans, as on many occasions victory was far away from India. The WTC final loss, and few other losses had Men in Blue in a bad taste. And when reasons for the disappointing performances were discussed, out of the many reasons one of them was the one dimensional batting. A single or no left hander batting line-up in top and middle order was termed as one of the reasons. And to counter it the team did take few steps.
Ishan Kishan, who has been in the international circuit from past few months, was given a chance to open in order to have a left-right combination. The experiment did help the team on a few occasions while on some others it didn't show up the promise it was expected. With Rishabh Pant already injured, team was missing left hander already. Furthermore, Ishan Kishan just playing as a replacement of Rishabh Pant probably meant that there is still going to be just one left hander in the squad accompanying Jadeja, if the later is in the squad. Therefore the inclusion of Kishan was good, but it didn't solve the sole issue of one dimensional batting for long term.
But it seems like the ongoing series with the West Indies have provided a few answers to the issue. The inclusion of players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma have provided the team with two left handers, who have the right mindset and the intent to adapt and go well. Jaiswal, who made his mark on his test debut itself, has also announced his arrival in T20Is yesterday. The explosive opener has proved that he is worth the hype he is getting. Tilak Varma on the other side, has showed that he is a calculative genius. He can hit the ball in the stands, and when necessary he has the ability to rotate the score board by converting 1s into 2s quickly.
Both of them look fluent, and raring to go. One can argue that the challenge they are facing currently against the Windies is not that strong yet. That is true as well, however they have a chance to prove it when they will be given the opportunity to play difficult teams. And the circumstances in which they have scored runs on the occasions against West Indies show that both of them have the ability and hunger to rise from unprecedented situations. It shows that they might just be prepared to face bigger teams.
What further goes in their as well as team's favour is the batting position these two bat at. While Jaiswal opens the innings, Tilak can be a perfect candidate for number 4, or even number 5 if needed. If these two continue to prove their prowess in batting against the mighty cricket playing nation, it would be safe to say that Indian team has found the permenant answers to the left handed crisis. Left handers are crucial to any team in the world. Right from Ganguly, Yuvraj, Gambhir, Raina to Dhawan, southpaws have always come to the team's rescue in difficult situations. And hoping the same, on this left hander's day, we can hope to see Jaiswal and Tilak play a long innings in their career ahead.
