The series in between England and India has been truly amazing for the Indian team and fans. Men in Blue have managed to defeat England, thereby winning the series 3-1 with still one match to go. With it Rohit Sharma became the only captain to defeat Bazball following English team in any series since they started to take the same approach. The victory for the team is certainly sweet, but more important are the positives from the series. Sarfaraz's dream debut, Akashdeep's entry in red ball cricket, Yashasvi's 2 double centuries on a trot have enthralled the Indians. But the biggest positive for the team has been the inclusion of Dhruv Jurel, who has shown tremendous promise.
Having played just one match before this test, he carried the Indian hopes all alone at a point where things looked really tough. His crucial innings, combined with Kuldeep's solid defence helped India gain an upper hand, when the team was struggling with a trailing score in the match. In process he missed out on a well deserved century, but he did the job of bringing the team back to life beautifully, and keeping a calm head he scored 90 most important runs for the country. And he replicated the same in the final innings with scoring a not out 37 runs to take team to a victory.
The victory was special, but more special was the feeling of finding a gem, who looks promising and has the right intent for the team. Post Rishab Plant's exclusion from the squad due to an accident, the team was finding it very difficult to have a good wicket keeper batter in the squad. A few options were tried and tested, and they failed. Some were average batters while some were average keepers. A much awaited KS Bharat also couldn't justify the hype around his potential. And just when it looked like we won't find a better alternative, came Dhruv Jurel, who is impressive with his glove work, and exceptional with his ability to perform under pressure.
Not much about him was known to fans, but now they know their new favourite Dhruv's story, which is inspiring. A son of a Kargil war veteran, a young Dhruv was always fond of the game. Initially his father was against his son's will to play cricket. But a young Dhruv's passion often led him to skip school classes for playing the game he loved. And one fine day, when his father got to know about it, he was infuriated at first, but then supported Dhruv's decision. He went a step ahead to borrow money from his friends to get a proper cricket bat for his son to follow the dream he saw.
Just like his father, Dhruv's mother has an important role in his success. She sold her ornaments to fund her son's passion. Both his parents wholeheartedly supported their son's dream, and he didn't disappoint them either. The kid who initially started as an off spinner, eventually turned into a wicket keeper batter. And outclassing his colleagues, he went on to rise the ranks showcasing the prowess he had. Very quickly he was a part of the U-14 and U-16 teams. He also went on to represent India in the U-19 world cup in 2020, and under his leadership India won the U-19 Asia cup which happened in the same year.
Dhruv continued to toil in the nets. Batting for a whopping 140 overs in the nets daily, he developed his technique by playing spin 4 hours every single day. A total of 100 throwdowns and facing 14 bowlers on a daily basis was a part of his daily routine, which massively helped him hone his skills. And his skills helped him perform greatly in the domestic circuit, where he excelled. His performance in domestic was noticed by Rajasthan Royals' scout, who picked him for 2023 IPL season. And to live up to their expectations, he made an immediate impact when he got a chance. Playing as a finisher, he finished few games, and displayed his street smart shot selection which helped his team's cause.
His efforts gained momentum as he was given a well deserved chance in the ongoing series against England due to the unavailability of Rahul, Kohli and Iyer. And he made it count. His knock on debut was overshadowed by 2 centuries and Sarfaraz's debut, but he had shown glimpses of what he could do. And carrying the same calm shoulders over his head, he held his nerves showing what he is made of. His knock of 90 turned the tide for the team, when even the seniors failed to perform. He lived up to the expectations of the selectors, and India saluted him, as he saluted his Kargil War veteran father.
His story from a cricket fan, to having a million cricket fans now is one to tell for everyone who watches the sport. His patience is noteworthy, and so is his hunger for runs. On his debut, everyone was speaking about much awaited debut for Sarfaraz Khan, and hardly anyone paid attention to Jurel. But unbothered by this, he patiently batted in that match, and showed his hunger to perform at the grandest level in the ongoing test match. His technique is commendable, and his intent is praise worthy. His immaculate glove work, along with his prowess in batting makes him the perfect wicket keeper batter one could've asked for. And going ahead, there is no doubt that he will be one of players whom the team would bank on. We congratulate him for his performance, and wish to see many of those coming in the days to come.q
